Cabinets

The overhead cabinets give me tons of storage space for clothes, camping gear, and pantry items. To date, they are rock solid even after driving over some of the worst washboard imaginable.

Plans

Once again, Sketchup proved invaluable for designing the cabinets.

Templating

This was the trickiest part. I made a cardboard template of the odd shape that will make up the cabinet dividers. Then I used the template to cut out of 3/4" plywood. I routered a notch in the bottom of each template into which the 1/4" thick cabinet bottoms would slide.

Assembly

After lots of pocket holes screwing and gluing, it begins to take shape. Hi dad!

Painting

Lots of sanding, taping and painting. Easily my least favorite thing.

More Painting

All of my clothes are turning white!

...and Staining

Doors

After painting and staining, it was time to assemble the doors and install hardware. A special tool cut the right size hole for the hinges.

Final Installation

I skipped a bunch of steps because I didn't get pictures, but here is the finished product. The cabinet assembly is screwed into studs using cabinet screws (and LOTS of shims). Doors are held open with pneumatic pistons and held shut with standard clasps.
